Focus and Scope

ARTiculate is a peer-reviewed, art historical journal that showcases the work of students currently pursuing a Graduate Degree in Art History. The publication is reflective of the University of Victoria History in Art Department's dedication to a global art history. The wide array of cultures and mediums covered in previously published submissions exemplifies the development of a forum for graduate art historical scholarship that remains committed to this inclusive art historical approach. Scholarship examining topics ranging from contemporary Indigenous serigraphy, to Byzantine ecclesiastical mosaics to Turkish luxury arts has been selected for publication. Given the intent to produce a publication attentive to the diversity implicated in contemporary definitions for artistic production, no preference is given to submissions pertaining to a particular temporal or cultural context. Consequently, prospective applicants are encouraged to utilize any number of theoretical approaches to develop their analyses.

Peer Review Process

Peer review is an essential component in the selection process. All submissions will be reviewed by two scholars in the specific area addressed by the paper in a double-blind process. Selection will be based on originality, quality of research, effective methodology, and overall contribution to the field of art history.

Publication Frequency

The inaugural issue of ARTiculate was published in February 2012. Thereafter, publication is anticipated approximately every two years. The next issue is scheduled to appear in the latter part of 2013.

Open Access Policy

This journal provides immediate open access to its content on the principle that making research freely available to the public supports a greater global exchange of knowledge.

Archiving

This journal utilizes the LOCKSS system to create a distributed archiving system among participating libraries and permits those libraries to create permanent archives of the journal for purposes of preservation and restoration. More...
