Turning Desert to Bloom: Israeli-Jordanian Peace Proposals for the Jordan Rift Valley

N. Kliot

Abstract

This study examines the recent peace plans for the Jordan Rift Valley, located between Jordan and Israel. With the expansion of the peace process in the Middle East, a number of documents were prepared that included plans for the development of the Jordan Rift Valley. These include the peace treaty between Jordan and Israel; a peace plan prepared by Israel; a peace plan developed by Jordan; and a plan made by the World Bank for the development of the region. A central part of the study analyzes the general and specific features of these plans and how they would influence the development of this border region. Finally, the paper discusses the theoretical literature of transborder cooperation and compares the unfolding Jordan Rift Valley border region with other border regions around the world.
