A Sense of Community: Communal Work in Post-Communist Romania
This article attempts to investigate a form of reciprocityparticular to work relations in Romanian villages and thesubsequent forms it has taken since the fall of the communistregime in 1989. I used Arthur Kideckel’s research in thevillage of Hârseni both as a starting point for my thesis andfor the location of my fieldwork. My research revealed thatduring the years that passed since his ethnography waspublished a resurgence of the custom of communal workevents (or clacã) took place, contrary to his prediction. However, because of economic and social factors, thevillagers are not aware of its reappearance.
