Body Language, Dress Codes and Background Noise: The Photographic Re-presentation of Lawyers in "Yellow Page" Ads
This paper reviews recent literature on the anthropology ofdress and explores the subject by way of a preliminary surveyand analysis of lawyers’ ads in the Yellow Pages of phonebooks. The survey was inconclusive, but my overallimpression is that the images in the ads extend two mainmessages to consumers. First, some ads emphasize thewarlike qualities of the lawyers, who offer to punish those whohave inflicted harm. Others emphasize the personal warmth ofthe lawyers, who offer to help the victim of harm along theroad to recovery.
