Journalist and political radical William Lyon Mackenzie (1795-1871) exposes the familial power structures that ran the government and economy of Province of Upper Canada (Ontario) in the early 19th century.

Author Biography

William Lyon Mackenzie

William Lyon Mackenzie was born in Dundee, Scotland, in 1795; he died in Toronto, Canada, in 1861.  Aged 25, he settled in the colonial Province of Upper Canada (established in 1791 by the Kingdom of Great Britain).  He worked as a journalist for the Colonial Advocate, and became a leading voice of the new Reform movement that advocated for responsible government and opposed the local oligarchy in power.  In 1834, the Reformers won a majority on the newly created Toronto City Council, he was elected its first mayor.  He became a leader of the Rebellions of 1837.
