Submission Preparation Checklist

As part of the submission process, authors are required to check off their submission's compliance with all of the following items, and submissions may be returned to authors that do not adhere to these guidelines.
  • The submission has not been previously published, nor is it before another journal for consideration (or an explanation has been provided in Comments to the Editor).
  • The submission file is in OpenOffice, Microsoft Word, or RTF document file format.
  • Where available, URLs for the references have been provided.
  • The text is single-spaced; uses a 12-point font; employs italics, rather than underlining (except with URL addresses); and all illustrations, figures, and tables are placed within the text at the appropriate points, rather than at the end.
  • The text adheres to the stylistic and bibliographic requirements outlined in the Author Guidelines.

Author Guidelines

The submission deadline for Volume 31 has been extended to October 29, 2025

While all paper topics will be considered for Volume 31 of Appeal, the Editorial Board appreciates submissions which touch on social justice, innovative approaches to legal reform, emerging areas of law, or topical legal issues.

  • Send submissions by email to appeal@uvic.ca. Email subject line must include “ASV 31
  • Save files as Microsoft Word documents only
  • Submissions may be any length, but a 3,000 to 9,000 word limit is suggested.
  • The Editorial Board will consider the content and form of the submission when assessing word limits (for example, book reviews may contain fewer words than essays).
  • Authors must also submit a 300-word abstract outlining their thesis, methodology, and contribution to legal scholarship or reform
  • For citations, adherence to the Canadian Guide to Uniform Legal Citation, 10th Edition (the "McGill Guide") is preferred, but in the spirit of Appeal’s open access policy, submissions using the Canadian Open Access Legal Citation Guide (the “COAL Guide”) will also be considered
  • Papers must have been completed while studying at the undergraduate or graduate law student level and must not be under consideration for publication elsewhere
