Abstract

The Workshop for Artists in Exile (Atelier des artistes en exil), founded in 2017 in Paris by Judith Depaule and Ariel Cypel, supports artists forced into exile by providing legal, social, linguistic, and professional assistance. Born from the 2015 migrant crisis and initial solidarity actions at the cultural venue Confluences, the association developed a structured model divided into three main poles: Creation, Training, and Emergency & Solidarity. The workshop welcomes artists based on three criteria: being in exile, having art as a life vocation, and demonstrating strong artistic identity. With hundreds of members over time, support typically spans three years and combines legal aid, French language learning through partnerships with major museums, workspace, professional training, and networking. The association also fosters artistic collaborations and organizes events such as the Visions d’Exil festival. Moving to new premises in 2025 marks a new phase focused on community engagement and sustainable cultural integration. In this exclusive interview, Judith Depaule discusses the genesis, mission, and future of the project (translated from the French by Elisa Ganivet and the editorial team with assistance of generative AI).
