About the Journal

Focus and Scope

The Ascendant Historian is a peer-reviewed undergraduate history journal seeking to publish the best scholarship produced by University of Victoria students concerning the past. We are interested in all methods and fields of inquiry. Our aim is to encourage students to dialogue with each other about their diverse interests across sub-disciplinary and disciplinary borders and to provide them with an opportunity to gain publication credentials and practice the academic process. We are committed to the highest standards of academic integrity.

Peer Review Process

All articles submitted to The Ascendant Historian will be given fair, equal, and unbiased review by volunteer University of Victoria undergraduate and graduate history students.

Publication Frequency

The Ascendant Historian will be published digitally twice per year (once in November and once in March) and will release a printed complilation edition at the end of the main academic year (end of March).  All articles published by the journal will be released upon publication.

Open Access Policy

This journal provides immediate open access to its content on the principle that making research freely available to the public supports a greater global exchange of knowledge.

Journal History

Compiled and published by The History Undergraduate Society (THUGS) by undergraduate students at the University of Victoria.

The Ascendant Historian was formerly published as The Corvette, The Clearihue Review, This Old Coast Blurred Genres, and The Ascendant Historian.

Author Self-Archiving Policy

This journal permits and encourages authors to post items submitted to the journal on personal websites or institutional repositories both prior to and after publication, while providing bibliographic details that credit, if applicable, its publication in this journal.
