Stewardship Pemberton Society A Vision for the Future
Abstract
Opportunities were identified to work with Stewardship Pemberton Society to help them move forward with their vision both as a society and with their recently built and established One Mile Lake Nature Centre (OMLNC). Society connects community, nature and people through encouraging the protection, restoration, and long-term sustainability of the natural environment through education, cooperation and community involvement. The society operates on a volunteer basis, which has restricted them from reaching their goals. Concerted efforts were required to help them move on to the next phase of their existence.
It is recommended that to enable SPS and the OMLNC to reach their goals and full potential outside sources of seed funding is required to pay wages for a part-time program coordinator until the society generates revenues to support this position themselves. Working with the volunteer board of directors, a program coordinator would be tasked with: creating a business and management plan for the society; creating a building maintenance and management plan for the One Mile Lake Nature Centre; and completing the outstanding objectives listed within the work plan. Accomplishing these tasks would assist in setting up the infrastructure to help raise revenues to cover: building and operations costs; fund future programs and projects; and in the long term, subsidize wages for a program coordinator once the seed funding has expired. Accomplishing these tasks would also build financial resiliency and sustainability within the society, which is imperative when securing outside funding sources can be unreliable and unpredictable.
